What to Look For in an AI Homework Helper

Most of these apps look identical in the store: point a camera, get an answer. The differences that matter only show up after you've used one for a term — so here's what to check before then.

Our bias, stated plainly

We build one of these apps — Aheadia. So treat this as a checklist from someone with a stake, not a neutral review. We've deliberately written the questions so you can apply them to any app, including ours, and we haven't ranked competitors or made claims about their features we can't verify.

1. Is the answer verified, or just generated?

This is the question almost nobody asks, and it's the most important one. A large language model generates text that looks like a correct solution. Usually it is. Sometimes it's confidently, fluently wrong — and the wrong answer reads exactly as convincingly as the right one.

What separates apps here is whether anything checks the result afterwards. A symbolic math engine can verify an algebraic answer independently: substitute the root back in, differentiate the antiderivative, confirm the identity holds. That's a different kind of assurance than "the model sounded sure".

How to test it: give the app a problem you already know the answer to — ideally a slightly awkward one, like an integral requiring a substitution, or a quadratic with irrational roots. Then give it something subtly malformed and see whether it flags the problem or just confabulates an answer.

2. Does it show the method or just the result?

An app that returns "x = 5" is a calculator with extra steps. The value is in the working: which method was chosen, why, and what happens at each line.

Check whether the steps are genuinely explanatory or just algebraic breadcrumbs. "Subtract 5 from both sides" is a step. "Isolate x by subtracting 5 from both sides, keeping the equation balanced" teaches the principle behind it. The second kind means you'll need the app less over time — which is the point.

Better still is whether the app can teach the method before giving you the answer. Seeing a similar problem worked through in full, then attempting yours on a blank page, is measurably more effective than reading your own solution — the reasons are in re-solving vs re-reading.

3. Does it cover your actual subjects?

Many homework apps are strongest at algebra and calculus, because symbolic math is a well-defined problem. Coverage often thins out for physics with diagrams, chemistry with reaction mechanisms, or anything requiring interpretation of a figure.

Be specific when you test this. Don't check "does it do physics" — check whether it handles the kind of physics on your syllabus this term. Same for word problems, which are a genuinely harder task than the equations hiding inside them.

4. Can it read your handwriting?

Every one of these apps demos beautifully on a printed textbook page. Your homework is not a printed textbook page — it's your handwriting, at an angle, in imperfect light, possibly with crossings-out.

How to test it: scan your own handwritten work, not a textbook. Watch specifically for the things OCR tends to confuse: exponents versus regular digits, minus signs versus fraction bars, x versus ×, and the scope of a square root sign. An app that misreads the problem will solve the wrong problem perfectly.

Also check whether you can correct a misread before it solves — being able to edit the extracted problem saves a lot of frustration.

5. Can you ask follow-up questions?

The moment that actually matters is when step four doesn't make sense. If the app hands you a static block of text and that's the end of the interaction, you're stuck exactly where you were — you just have a nicer-looking version of the thing you didn't understand.

Look for whether you can ask "why did you do that?" or "can you solve it a different way?" and get a real answer about your problem. And check whether that conversation is saved: being able to return to it a week later, when revising, is worth more than it sounds.

6. What does it really cost, and how do you cancel?

Most of these apps are free to install and gated after a few questions a day. That's fine — but read the actual terms before the trial converts:

7. What happens to your data?

You're uploading photographs of your schoolwork, which can include your name, your school's letterhead, and occasionally other students' work. Worth two minutes of checking:

A word on academic integrity

These apps sit in genuinely contested territory, and it's worth being straight about it. Copying an app's output onto an assignment you'll be graded on is plagiarism at most schools, regardless of how the answer was produced. Some institutions treat AI assistance as cheating even when you've rewritten it.

The practical distinction teachers tend to draw is between using a tool to understand and using it to submit. Checking your answer after attempting a problem, or working through a similar example to learn a method, is closer to how a tutor works. Photographing twenty questions and transcribing the outputs is not.

Beyond the rules, there's the self-interested argument: the test won't have the app in it. Any method that gets you through homework without building the skill just relocates the problem to a worse moment.

Check your school's policy. It's usually more specific than students assume.
